Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be homeschooling my child?

You do not need to be currently homeschooling your child. Families come from all types of educating models.
What if the program isn't a good fit for my child or my family?

We understand that all programs and children are not a one size fits all. We only ask that you have open communication with us so we can assist in any way we can. During the first month of programming attendance, if your child is not adjusting or if we do not feel it is a good fit either, you can leave the program immediately. After the first month, we require one month's notice to allow us to reach out to other interested families
Is it required that I volunteer?

This is a drop-off program and their are no volunteer requirements.
How do I know if my child is fit for Whispering Pines Classes?

Inclusion & Group Safety

Our program welcomes children with diverse learning styles and neurotypes. We celebrate differences and aim to create a supportive, respectful environment for all learners.

Because we spend much of our time outdoors, safety and group awareness are essential. Children must be able to remain with the group, follow safety instructions, and respond to adult guidance. Our program is not designed to provide constant one-to-one behavioral support.
We partner with families to ensure that our setting is a safe and positive fit for each child and for the group as a whole.

In addition, your child will be successful if...
-
They are capable and able to walk long distances
-
They can handle cold temperatures.
-
They are able to get dressed for the outdoors independently, with minimal help.
-
Your family has the ability to provide quality, outdoor clothing needed for long periods of outdoor time, in ALL elements. We have discount codes available and encourage second hand!
Do you provide meals?

To be able to put all emphasis on learning, exploring, and making connections, Whispering Pines will not provide lunches or snacks, as meal preparation takes time. In some of our programs we will do cooking activities as part of our curriculum!
Can I sign up for just a few classes? Or do I need to commit?

Yes, we do require a full-year commitment at this time and are not able to offer part-time or drop-in options. Our activities and projects are thoughtfully planned well in advance, and consistent attendance allows children to fully engage in the learning process. It also helps us build strong, trusting relationships with each student and create a cohesive community where everyone feels connected and supported.
Where are you located?

We are located in Elk River, MN on the property of the founder.
Is this a faith-based program?

Whispering Pines Village recognizes that there are many walks of faith in this community. We do not discriminate for religious beliefs. It should be known that the founders faith is rooted in Christianity, while we will not explicitly be teaching from the bible, or persuading you otherwise, mentions of Christian traditions and beliefs will be discussed from time to time and most Christian holidays will be celebrated in a secular way. Each family comes from different beliefs and traditions and children are NOT discouraged from speaking upon their beliefs or family culture.
What ages can enroll in the program?

We offer programming to 4-10 year old's (depending on the program).

Do you go outside in ALL weather? What about outdoor gear?

Yes! We do go outside in ALL weather, aside from lighting or severe weather warmings. There is a comprehensive list of what each child will need for the outdoors. Quality gear MUST be provided each day. We are an outdoor program and these things are important for success and comfort.
We are hoping to have a class set of rain pants by fall 2026. We also have a discount code and always recommend second hand!

What curriculum do you use for Nature School?

To meet the needs of all the children in the program, we do not subscribe to one particular curriculum. We focus on the whole-child and incorporate curriculum based on our studies, interests, and seasonal changes. Some examples of curriculum models we incorporate:
Project-based learning, WILD math, Treehouse Schoolhouse, 5 in a Row
