What happens in a NatureLab and Pathfinders Workshop?

Pathfinders & NatureLab (Ages 6–9/10)

Age Requirements:

In order to keep the activities age appropriate, we ask that children fit into the age categories listed below:

Must turn 6 by May 15th, 2026.

Must not turn 10 before September 1, 2026

Imagine a full day filled with curiosity, creativity, invention, experimentation, cooking, pioneer living, bushcraft,  and meaningful outdoor experiences!

Our day is intentionally divided into two parts, allowing students to engage deeply in both STEAM-based learning AND hands-on bushcraft and pioneer skills. Each day offers a balanced rhythm of creative investigation and outdoor skill-building.

During our STEAM-focused time, students explore through hands-on activities that spark curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving. These experiences may include building and engineering challenges, science investigations, cooking projects, artistic design, and creative invention. At times, this work will take the form of collaborative or project-based learning, giving students opportunities to plan, test ideas, and revise their work together. Other times, learning may be skill-based, exploratory, or guided by demonstrations and practice. We emphasize teamwork, critical thinking, and giving students the space to engage meaningfully with the process of learning.

In the second portion of our day, we head outdoors as much as possible to explore bushcraft, pioneer, and frontier skills in age-appropriate ways. These experiences are designed to build confidence, resilience, and respect for the natural world while allowing students to actively engage with their environment. Activities may include:

  • Learning foundational outdoor safety and awareness

  • Practicing knots and introductory, closely supervised tool skills

  • Building simple shelters or structures using natural materials

  • Cooking over a fire and understanding fire safety

  • Nature-based handwork such as weaving, cordage-making, or crafting with natural elements

  • Exploring local plants, habitats, and seasonal changes

  • Constructing, creating, and problem-solving with materials found in nature

  • Participating in cooperative challenges that encourage perseverance and teamwork

Throughout the entire day, we prioritize outdoor exploration, movement, and peer relationship building. Students will have time to play, discover, collaborate, and form friendships, developing social confidence alongside their academic and practical skills.

Pathfinders & NatureLab is designed for students who want to get their hands dirty, ask questions, explore boldly, and engage in both STEAM learning and the timeless skills of working with the land. It is a program for makers, thinkers, adventurers, and collaborators—children who thrive when given opportunities to create, build, and grow through real experiences.
